In astronomy there are 4 stages as an astronomer.
In the first stage (level 1). You are a post doctoral fellow, and all you need to do is conduct research and you get a salary of 30000-40000 you need a PhD in science or physics to attain this position.
In level 2, assistant professor, you need to complete post doctoral fellowship to be able to apply for this spot, and your responsibilities are to teach at a university or college, and do administrative work there.
In level 3 you are an associate professor and this is the most secure position. All you need to do is research, teach and be an administrator, when you get this position it is tenure so that means that you can't get fired unless you do something against the law and the pay is really good too, it is 80000-100000.
In level 4 you do the same work as an associate professor but will be a more senior position. the pre-requisite is that you need to be internationally recognized to keep and maintain this job.
Of course you can just become a teacher and then get all the benefits, salary and responsibilities of teaching (astronomy naturally).
