Astronomy, the profession that many strive for, it truly has wonderful rewards if you can attain the position.
Being an astronomer isn't only looking through a telescope in a cold dark room trying to figure out the night sky, no, being an astronomer is much better than that. In the life of being an astronomer you study the night sky, yes, but in a well lit room and usually it's done with computers and satallites observing space from space. Nowadays you find astronomers using millimeter, radio, optical and infrared telescopes to observe the universe. The whole electromagnetic spectrum is avaliable to astronomers and each part of the spectrum can reveal different parts of the universe, each part has its own characteristics as well.
In astronomy you need a lot of math and science skills because you need to analyse data and create charts to compare and contrast the information from this time period to information of another time period then when you spot a trend or a pattern you can develop it into a hypothesis. Then once the hypothesis is done you develop it into a theory which is the highest ranked thought that hasn't been proved right or wrong yet in an experiment.
Also in astronomy, you can teach at colleges and universities and get students interested in astronomy. When you apply for astronomer if you apply to be an associate professor your salary annually is 60000-100000, and your job is tenure which means "You can't get fired unless you do something really stupid."(Mr. Rosenblood). Astronomy can offer many things and it is a very stable job overall it is a great job to have you can have a stable income and a safe position (at least as safe as it gets).
Astronomers work at universities, planetariums, aerospace firms, government observatories, and museums, most of the time you are indoors creating charts, analyzing data, and developing theories. In astronomy you can spend a total of around 30 days on the field gathering data. But that data can't be all found at the same place on the world because you need information on every part of the cosmos not only the little part of it that you can see in your backyard. Due to this astronomers are required to travel frequently in order to gather information on the stars and constellations from across the world. Sometimes work can take you to an exotic and tropical region of the world. this job also may require you to work at night because the stars are most visible at night.
When you become an astronomer and you develop a theory or have a breakthrough you will be helping the human race advance in their understanding of space. Its nice thinking that you are making a difference in the world and with astronomy you can do that in a big way.
